Three Questions to Ask Before Investing in a New Home Addition

We recently had some clients come in for a home remodeling consultation and the first thing they said was, “We love our home, but it’s just getting too small for us. It doesn’t really fit our family or our lifestyle anymore.” As a local contractor with expertise in building home additions in Birmingham, AL, we hear this type of comment a lot.

Home additions offer people the luxury of staying where they are, while also getting the additional space they need. However, a lot goes into a new home addition, so before you start knocking down walls, here are a few questions you should ask yourself.

What is my budget?

Most people have a pretty clear idea of what their dream home should look like, but they often don’t know how much making all their dreams come true is likely to cost. It’s easy to blow a budget to get the extra amenities they want, but don’t necessarily need. In fact, one of the toughest jobs a contractor has is marrying a client’s vision with their budget. A good contractor, however, will help you get as close to your dream as possible, without breaking the bank—but they need to have a clear idea of your budget to do so. Before you dive headfirst into a new home addition project, be sure that you have a very clear idea of how much you want to spend so your contractor can help you stay within that budget.

Will there be a return on my investment?

For some people, the return on investment from a new home addition isn’t the important thing, but it is still something you should take into consideration. While extending your living room may make it easier to host all the kids and grandkids for Christmas, it may not actually increase your home’s value. In these instances, you may decide that remodeling your existing space is a better decision, rather than adding on to your home.

Are there any building restrictions I should worry about?

The short answer is that there are always going to be building restrictions, but whether or not these restrictions will prevent you from getting the home of your dreams is the question. You may want to extend your home by 15 square feet, but you may only be permitted to extend it by 10. Having a general sense of what is and is not allowed in your neighborhood can help make the planning process more productive.
