What is my budget?

Before you dive headfirst into a new home addition project, be sure that you have a very clear idea of how much you want to spend so your contractor can help you stay within that budget.
Will there be a return on my investment?
For some people, the return on investment from a new home addition isn’t the important thing, but it is still something you should take into consideration. While extending your living room may make it easier to host all the kids and grandkids for Christmas, it may not actually increase your home’s value. In these instances, you may decide that remodeling your existing space is a better decision, rather than adding on to your home.
Are there any building restrictions I should worry about?
The short answer is that there are always going to be building restrictions, but whether or not these restrictions will prevent you from getting the home of your dreams is the question. You may want to extend your home by 15 square feet, but you may only be permitted to extend it by 10. Having a general sense of what is and is not allowed in your neighborhood can help make the planning process more productive.
