Having family and friends stay overnight is commonplace throughout the summer. But are you prepared to host these extra guests? Will they have a place to sleep other than your lumpy couch? If not, you should seriously consider converting your garage into another living space for guests. Continue reading to learn everything you need to know about converting a garage.

What goes into converting a garage?

Making sure your guests have a nice place to stay is a great idea. That being said, it’s important to know what all goes into converting a garage before you dive headfirst into the project! These are a few of the biggest things that go into garage conversions in Birmingham, AL:

  • Add insulation: Chances are, your garage currently doesn’t have the proper amount of insulation. In fact, garages are typically the most under-insulated part of a home. Fix that before your guests arrive! Add the right amount of insulation to ensure they’re comfortable during their stay.
  • Replace your garage door: Needless to say, you’ll need to replace your garage door with a real wall and standard door before you start having people over! Again, make sure this stud wall is fully insulated to keep your heating and cooling costs low and to ensure your guests are comfortable throughout their time in your home.
  • Upgrade your electrical system: Is your garage’s current electrical system able to handle a larger load of electricity that comes with having people over? Probably not! Be sure to call an electrician to upgrade your system. Doing so can prevent short circuits and even house fires.
  • Add plumbing: You might as well make your guests camp out in the back yard if you’re making them stay in a room without running water! You don’t necessarily need to install a full bathroom out in the garage, but it’d be nice to at least have a toilet and sink out there for your guests.
  • Install an HVAC system: Setting up a couple of fans in your converted garage isn’t going to cut if for your guests—they’ll need proper heating and cooling in their private space. You have two options to keep them comfortable: heat and cool your garage with your current HVAC system, or purchase a ductless mini-split unit for the garage. Both are good options—just be sure to do your research to find out which is the more affordable and practical choice.
  • Add windows: Nobody wants to stay in a windowless room. Your new guest room isn’t a prison, after all! Adding a couple of windows is a fast project for any experienced contractor. Just make sure you choose the right team for the job.
  • Buy the right furniture: Before you start inviting people over, be sure to purchase some nice furniture to ensure your guests are happy and comfortable throughout their stay.

Converting a garage isn’t an overnight project, but with the right team on the job, it’ll be done before you know it. Call Metro Contractors Inc. today to learn more about garage conversions in Birmingham, AL or schedule a project!
